First Sunday Reading for February 2024
Feb 4 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am

Home & Family

Know that a family may be made of  single adults, or differing combinations of adults and children a bond of love. Meeting provides an essential sense of family for those without families.

The Meeting must be both bold and tender in offering assistance to family that may be experiencing discord or domestic abuse.

  • How do we make our homes places of friendliness, peace, and renewal, where spirit is real for those who live there and for those who visit?
  • How can we keep our commitments outside the home from encroaching on the time and living attentions the family needs for its health and well-being?
  • What supports do we offer the aging and the widowed?

Advices & Queries

Family life is strengthened by recognizing that all family members and indeed all people are God’s children and that we are called to nurture and love each other as members of divine creation.

Any combination of adults and children or adults without children can make a family. Family is a place where it is safe to be one’s self and receive the encouragement of other family members to grow and expand.  The family is a primary place to explore ways of living out Truth.

  • How do we make our homes places of friendliness, peace and renewal, where Spirit is real for those who live there and those who visit?
  • How do we keep commitments outside the family from encroaching on the time and loving attention the family needs for its health and well-being?

Returning to the Land: Colonization
Feb 10 @ 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm

January-February 2024: “Returning to the Land” by Dr. Nia To Go There (Cree) a series of four webinars co-sponsored by Decolonizing Quakers and Friends Peace Teams.

The overall theme, Returning to the Land, is a clarion call for us to change how we see ourselves within and in relationship with the Living Earth and other life-forms. Using a cultural lens, we examine the Western culture and contrast it with the original culture of the Indigenous peoples. The big question is: How do we bridge these contrasting worldviews and heal from our shared colonial history and heritage?

The topics are listed below with their registration links. You are invited to register for all four, although it is not required. Nia will recommend short readings for each program. A contribution of $20 to $50 is recommended, with a minimum of $5.

MODULE 3: COLONIZATION – February 10,
3:30 to 5:00 eastern time12:30 to 2:00 pacific time

This module describes the characteristics of colonization where original cultures are replaced by another culture. Nia shares the story of Rocky Boy Reservation in Montana and how her extended family and the community are experiencing intergenerational trauma. Using the lens of collective trauma we also look at the effects of colonization on both the Settlers and Indigenous People.  The reading is entitled Nowhere Left to Go that poignantly depicts the story of the Cree and Ojibway people searching for a place to live for thirty + years.
